[…] “As vengeful as an Eastern sovereign, Agata Tomšič weaves her spell-like vocalisations and her grim anathemas with obsessive rhythm, whilst stifling any interpretative intention that might be moving or captivating: a cold and furious nursery rhyme, a sequence of grim verses, knife-like stabs that elongate the final vowel of every word into a note of hatred, into a blasphemy of pain and rage. In her workshop, in her alchemist’s study, the Slovenian artist has recreated a Heiner Müller steeped in murky undertones, demonic vocal experimentation, dark sexual obsessions, and dramatic conflicts from magical, archaic and ultra-modern eras.

This ninth edition of the Festival is entitled ‘Nordic Focus’ and focuses on theatre and the performing arts from the Baltic countries. At the Artificierie Almagià, Radvila Darius, son of Vytautas by Karolis Kaupinis, a Lithuanian film director and television journalist, conveys a subtle sense of unease. The most apt title for this collection of vintage television footage, filmed during the transition from Soviet Lithuania to its new embrace of the capitalist West, might in fact be The Unease of Lithuania.
